Matteo Cancellieri Demonstrates Flashing Moments of Exceptional Talent in Bright Spot for Haywire Lazio
The feeling at Lazio's home ground was decidedly gloomy during the weekend fixture. Lazio were trailing against Torino, a team that had let in a total of 10 goals while netting just two in their last five league matches. Ultras from the Curva Nord were wrapping up their latest protest in a long-running conflict with chairman Claudio Lotito.
A Season Falling Apart?
Had their campaign falling apart, or was there ever any cohesion maintaining its structure to start with? Lazio reinstated Maurizio Sarri to lead the team in the summer transfer window, only for him to later acknowledge that the club had not mentioned a registration embargo they were about to receive for fiscal problems. Reports that he could resign were not true, but he did say that Lotito had "deceived" him.
Lazio became as messy in their performances as they were off it, overcoming Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but being defeated in the remaining initial five matches, including the Rome derby. At any given moment, it's been difficult to determine if they're getting better or collapsing.
Cancellieri's Unexpected Return
A single player remained positive through it. Matteo Cancellieri had not been expected to be at Lazio this year. He spent the last one with Parma on loan and, during the summer break, Lazio were pushing for him to remain there a while longer. The signing restriction forced a rethink. Lazio could not afford to reduce their roster lacking backup options.
He joined originally under Sarri's first spell, back then just 20 years old graduate of Verona's academy. He recorded 20 Serie A appearances with the club in the 2022-23 season, all but one of those coming off the bench. Their former sporting director, Igli Tare, who departed after that campaign, subsequently claimed Sarri of "promising everyone Cancellieri was destined for stardom but then not selecting him."
Finding His True Position
Maybe Sarri was persistently working to work out the specific characteristics of Cancellieri's abilities. Labeled as a flank player when he joined, Cancellieri nevertheless spent the majority of that term as a struggling deputy to Ciro Immobile as center forward. During 63 outings while playing for Empoli and Parma in the past two years, he netted seven goals. Shoehorn
